Luke Jerram at Pennington Flash Open Water Swim

Luke Jerram is known globally for his innovative arts projects and large scale public artworks and the internationally acclaimed artist will be unveiling his brand new art installation ‘Floating Earth’ to The Flash.

'Floating Earth' is a 10m diameter replica of planet Earth and this amazing installation will float on Pennington Flash for 10 days. Designed to give visitors a unique experience to view the Earth as if it had fallen from the sky into the water. Luke Jerram aims to evoke the ‘overview effect’. The overview effect was first described by Space author Frank White in 1987 he explained how astronauts experience a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the planet and the environment.

The awe inspiring Floating Earth installation combined with the equally awe inspiring nature reserve, Pennington Flash, will be a perfect match and should take visitors breath away both day and night.

Our sister MyOpenwaterSwim (www,myopenwaterswim.co.uk) has been organising swims at Pennington Flash for nearly 10 years and during the winter season we continue with our winter timetable every Saturday morning from 07:30 - 09:30. Take advantage on Saturday 20th and 27th November at the swim to see the 10m Globe floating on The Flash. The swim will be in the usual location at Leigh and Lowton Sailing club - for environmental and ecological reasons we are unable to swim any closer to the installation.
