The Weird and Wonderful Ceepo Shadow-R

In the middle of last year, Japanese triathlon-exclusive brand Ceepo unveiled their very abnormal Shadow-R frame-set, defying rules and yet somehow retaining an interesting, lovable appearance.

From first glance, the Shadow-R may look like a concept bike, similar to those we get from car manufacturers every year, but this couldn't be further from the truth. The bike is designed to be fast and efficient for triathletes, and Ceepo hopes to improve the design in the coming years with the next generation. So how does this piece of alien technology pull it all off? Lets find out...

Primarily, the Shadow-R is astounding for how it manages its aerodynamics: through a complete rethinking of how the frame works altogether. Unlike regular bikes with their various vertical forks and struts, on the Shadow-R, Ceepo decided to mount the front forks horizontally instead, minimising drag and allowing the bike to cut through air like a hot knife through butter.

Looking at the diagram on the left, you'll also notice the rear wheel has no seat-stays either, which again makes big differences on the big day when you shave off those extra few seconds. Below you can see a diagram of a regular double-diamond frame, and the areas in red show you the parts of the frame that increase drag.

Clearly there are a lot of obstructions here, which is precisely what Ceepo have worked to remove. The bike this generation weighs in around 3,680g. With future generations, we are going to see this number decrease and the bike's performance improve as a result.
