Orca swim bootees - take the edge off the cold
Thermal protection I bought these as I hoped they would extend my sea swimming later into autumn. They do make a difference, swimming recently at 12 degrees centigrade I found my ungloved hands started to feel a bit cold but my feet in these bootees felt fine. (I swim for about an hour in the sea just north of Inverness). Sizing I wear a shoe size 4.5 or 5 (depending on the make) and found the XS fitted perfectly. They are easy to get on and I can get my wet suit on over them without any trouble. (If you struggle try the poly bag trick ie put your feet into a poly bag and slide it down inside your wet suit) Taking them off after a swim takes a bit longer simply because my hands are a bit cold and the wet neoprene is a bit clingy. Comparison with other makes I have not tried any other make of thermal bootee so I can only compare them to swimming in bare feet. They do make a difference. I reckon I will be able to swim for longer periods of time while the water is fresh (ie around 12 degrees) and make some short swims when the water gets even cooler, which I would not do in bare feet. They are quite expensive, but I enjoy my swimming so much I reckon that the “cost per wear” will work out economical. Care After swimming in the sea I rinse them in fresh water and hang up (inside out )to dry. They have always dried out in time for the next days swim.
