Triathlon Buoyancy Shorts - Maximise your Winter Indoor Pool Training

Triathlon Winter Indoor Pool Training

As the weather is getting colder, many open water swimmers return to the pool for the autumn winter training season.

A triathlon wetsuit provides buoyancy in the water and as a result returning to pool swimming can often be quite challenging. One of the key issues is the lack of core stability and leg kick which results in drag making it much more difficult to swim efficiently.

Buoyancy swim shorts provide a very similar feeling to wearing a triathlon wetsuit as they elevate your core and as such make it easier to retain a flatter position in the water. This also allows the swimmer to concentrate on a more effective leg kick and glide with each stroke, without that 'sinking leg' feeling. The extra support also allows the swimmer to focus more on their arm stroke technique.

Buoyancy shorts are designed as an alternative to a pull buoy and are suitable for any level of triathlete looking to refine their open water swimming technique whilst in a pool. Wearing a wetsuit during a triathlon swim is very different to swimming without a wetsuit - the majority of your power needs to derive from your upper body whereas your legs and core provide the essential control. These shorts help develop your open water swimming technique whilst in the pool - wearing a full wetsuit would either be too hot or banned by the life-guards.

Results have shown that over time a swimmer’s body position, speed and endurance can be significantly increased by training with buoyancy shorts. As with any training aid ideally, it's best to only use these shorts during certain swim sets and look at training exercises to strengthen your core and improve your stroke rather than biome too reliant on buoyancy shorts.

Buoyancy shorts can be worn over your usual swim-costume - and when the weather is warm enough they can also be used in open-water training or races as an alternative to swimming in a full wetsuit.
