Top Pro Triathlon team BMC becomes ‘powered by 2XU’

Posted by Steve Cox on 27th Jan 2021

Major MyTriathlon supplier 2XU has just agreed a deal to become a main sponsor of the international BMC Pro Triathlon team for 2021, in what’s being seen as a vote of confidence for the coming competition season.

The BMC team will comprise seven top-level triathletes from six different nations, including 2018 UK National Championships winner Katrina Matthews (pictured). They’ll be looking to top their 2020 performance, which saw team members take three Ironman titles in a severely curtailed race programme.

Katrina herself hit a highpoint last season with a win in the Florida Ironman event, in the course of which she achieved the third fastest ever finish time by a British woman. She is looking to make her debut at the event’s World Championships later this year in Hawaii.

Alongside her in the BMC Pro Triathlon team will be Pablo Dapena Gonzalez (ESP), Kristian Høgenhaug (DEN), Chris Leiferman (USA), Max Neumann (AUS), Patrik Nilsson (SWE) and Chelsea Reilly Sodaro (USA).

Bob De Wolf, BMC team CEO, said: “We are entering our eighth season as a top international team, and it is fantastic to be able to continue building on such a great project.

“I am elated with the continued support from BMC Switzerland for the next two seasons and we are very pleased to start working with 2XU as our dedicated ‘powered by’ partner.”

He outlined the benefits he expects the link-up with 2XU to bring: “The partnership with 2XU offers us the opportunity to deliver real physiological benefits on the garments side – enabling our athletes to train harder, perform stronger and recover faster.

“As the world’s most technical sportswear company, 2XU brings the know-how, expertise and scientifically-proven benefits to provide our athletes with best-in-class race and training apparel and compression wear to optimise overall performance.”

2XU chief marketing officer Luke O’Shea added: “Beyond the obvious opportunities across product development, R&D, testing and immediate feedback from top-level athletes is the wider impact we can make through incorporating our brand mission of creating a fitter, healthier world – through the sport of triathlon, with this team and these athletes it gives us a very unique opportunity.” O’Shea rounded off the announcement by saying: “We have some very exciting things planned in the pipeline that will allow the athletes to perform at their best but also bring something new to the world of triathlon so watch this space.”
