British Triathlon suspends events to end of April

Posted by Steve Cox on 18th Mar 2020

No sooner had we posted our article suggesting that British Triathlon was holding back on introducing restrictions on forthcoming events due to the COVID-19 outbreak than it did announce decisive steps.

So as of yesterday (Tuesday 17 March) all official triathlon events organised by British Triathlon, Triathlon England, Triathlon Scotland and Welsh Triathlon are off, until 30 April at the earliest.

“We have not taken this decision lightly but in the light of the rapidly changing situation, we feel it is essential,” the organisations’ statement said.

The list of suspended events not only covers races and age group qualifiers, but also any individual training, performance camps and other regional events.

BT continued: “We recognise that this news will be disappointing, and potentially worrying for some, but ask for your support as we navigate through this difficult time.”

The organisation has also put out a new list of coronavirus-related FAQs, which addresses issues such as advice on club training sessions, and whether race entry fees will be refunded.

Given the advice on that page, it would seem that club officials are likely to be fielding many questions in the coming weeks from concerned athletes.

We’ll do our best to keep you updated on advice being issued at a national level, but if you have any questions about a specific race, its organiser should be your first point of contact.
