Orca - RS1 Men's Thermal Open Water Wetsuit

No suit keeps you warmer in all water conditions

The Openwater RS1 Thermal Wetsuit is claimed to be better at keeping you warm in all water than any other wetsuit in the Orca range.

It features a specially developed inner lining to keep in as much heat as possible for open water swimming. It also has a second layer of 'batwing' neoprene that provides more insulation along the lines of the zip and neck areas, which is effective at keeping out cold water.

GARMENT FEATURES AND BENEFITS

Extra warmth: In the torso, up to 5mm of Yamamoto 39 technical foam provides maximum thermal insulation where you need it most, without affecting the your position in the water or your movement. This material provides 85% more insulation than when you don't wear a wetsuit. The Thermal X high-performance inner lining retains heat more efficiently than standard Orca linings. It is also comfortable and soft to the touch.
Yamamoto 40 neoprene: Yamamoto 40 is used in the shoulders and back together with the Infinityskin lining. This material can stretch by up to 130%, - more than double its original size - helping put more power into your swim stroke. To help the wide range of movements made by your shoulders, it offers 72% less resistance than a conventional wetsuit.
Batwing' construction: To avoid heat loss in the back through the zip, this model features a 'Batwing' construction made from a second layer of neoprene. This layer prevents water from seeping through the suit's zip and reaching your body, keeping a layer of warm water inside. It also guarantees a comfortable, snug fit in the neck, reducing friction and the amount of water which can get into the suit through the neck area.

    Wetsuit fit

Posted by Michael Oxford on 6th Feb 2023

I was at the lower end of my height sizing wise, but the suit seems relatively short on the leg. I brought ML, and it is 50MM shorter than my sailfish Medium wetsuit. Workable but short...

    Excellent thermal wetsuit

Posted by Justin on 19th Feb 2022

I'm extremely impressed with this wetsuit and would definitely recommend it. So far the coldest water I've been in with it is 9°C and I've stayed nice and warm for the hour I was in the water without feeling any cold water leaking in. The suit feels really good quality, and despite being thicker in the body to keep you warm, offers incredible flexibility. The Yamamoto 40 neoprene was a bit of a bonus as I mostly chose the wetsuit to stay warm, but the freedom of movement this offers in the arms is unbelievable, so may end up having to upgrade my summer wetsuit as a result. The buoyancy of this wetsuit seems spot on too in order to maintain a good position in the water. With all of these things combined, I managed to knock 9 mins off my previous swim time the first time I tried this wetsuit. This wetsuit was to replace a Huub thermal one I got a couple of months before, but considering the RRP of that was similar, the quality of that was horrendous compared to this Orca one. I ended up having to glue seams back together after every other swim and the flexibility wasn't anywhere close to what the Orca RS1 offers. As I had been very impressed with my Orca Openwater Core wetsuit in the summer, I decided to go with Orca again, and as I say, they really didn't disappoint given the quality is in a different league. I'll definitely be sticking with Orca in future now instead of being drawn in by Huub's impressive marketing. It's worth saying My Triathlon was brilliant too. It would be physically impossible to despatch my order any quicker and it arrived the next day. I'm sure I will be planning more orders in the future for my hobby that is becoming ever-more expensive!
